We are officially less than 100 days away from this year’s Formula SAE International Challenge competition (May 8-11, 2019) which will be held in Michigan.
As you might know, SolidWorks is sponsor the Formula SAE, Formula Student, Baja SAE, and Supermileage Challenge competitions.
These are great competitions because they give university students real-world experience designing, building, testing, and competing, with original automotive designs in a team environment. Successful teams must meet all the challenges of today’s automotive industry, communication, deadlines, budgets, and teamwork.
If your students are involved in SAE competitions this year, SolidWorks offers a great CAD tutorial that covers the construction of a Formula 1 SAE car brake assembly using SOLIDWORKS Simulation.
This tutorial – called the SolidWorks SAE Design and Analysis Project – teaches the principles of assembly design and structural analysis using SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation as an integral part of a creative and iterative design process. You “learn by doing” as you complete modeling and structural analysis lessons.
Keep in mind this tutorial is for users who are already experienced with SolidWorks Software. Before you begin the SAE Design and Analysis Project, you should complete the following tutorials that are integrated in the SolidWorks software:
- Lesson 1 – Parts
- Lesson 2 – Assemblies
- Lesson 3 – Drawings
You can access the tutorials by clicking Help, SolidWorks Tutorials. The tutorial resizes the SolidWorks window and runs beside it. As an alternative, you can complete the following lessons from CAD Student Guide:

- Lesson 1: Using the Interface
- Lesson 2: Basic Functionality
- Lesson 3: The 40-Minute Running Start
- Lesson 4: Assembly Basics
- Lesson 6: Drawing Basics
