Last week we teamed up with Stratasys and local universities to host a couple 3D Printing Seminars: Additive Manufacturing in Education. We heard from industry experts about the latest in 3D printing technologies, including aerospace industry insider perspectives and how local universities have incorporated additive manufacturing into a variety of their programs.
First up we headed to Virginia Commonwealth University where we heard from Dr. Charles Cartin about how the school enlists a wide variety of 3D printers, from MakerBots to professional level Stratasys systems, to give students exposure to all kinds of additive manufacturing tools. We also heard from Douglas Greenwood, Senior Engineer for the Fleet Readiness Center East in Cherry Point, North Carolina, who explained how additive manufacturing technologies support fleet readiness.
Next we headed to The University of Maryland, where Rick Blanton led us through a tour of the university’s many labs, including the Rapid Prototyping Center, MakerBot Innovation Center, and a new bio-engineering facility that features a Leidos-sponsored Research Hub. We also heard from Samuel Silva, Project Manager for AIRWorks AM/DT and Mechanical Engineer for local consultancy J.F. Taylor, Inc. Samuel offered insight into his journey going from being a student to entering the workforce and the skill sets he acquired along the way.
