Laser Cutters for the Classroom: Finding the Right Fit

K-12, vocational and university educators are all turning to laser systems to illustrate complex design and engineering principles.

There are a few key factors will make some laser cutters and engravers better suited for a classroom, and this mainly comes down to safety and usability. Here are a few key things to consider when looking at laser systems for your school.

Ease of Use

It can be difficult to find enough time to allow several students to use a piece of technical equipment in just a single class period. Luckily, certain types of laser systems can help drastically cut down on time. For example, calculating the power, speed and pulses per inch for a laser to cut your material (based on material type and thickness) can take a lot of time. Systems that offer the ability to select preset materials from a software database will save time so that you can focus on the learning objectives for the day.

Optics Protection

When teaching a full classroom of students, you can’t afford to have your laser unusable for reasons that could be avoided. Laser systems should have optics protection from dust, debris and other invisible contaminants to prevent frequent replacement of laser tubes or parts because this can leave the system out of commission for long periods of time.

Laser Wattage

Think about the type of material you plan to cut most commonly and the thickest material you ever plan to cut. Every 10W of power provides about a tenth of an inch of cutting depth, which is why what you plan to do with your laser system can make a big difference in the type of systems you consider.

If you think your program will grow or your needs will change, consider a system that allows you to easily swap out for a more powerful laser tube later on. This creates significant cost savings instead of buying an entirely new system.
