Extreme Redesign 3D Printing Contest for Students

Stratasys has kicked off its 13th Annual Extreme Redesign 3D Printing Challenge, giving students a chance to win big for their 3D printable designs.

Students across the three disciplines of engineering, design, and art, jewelry & architecture are invited to create an original piece – or redesign an existing work – leveraging the power of 3D printing. These are the three contest categories:

  1. Engineering: Secondary Education (middle/high school)
  2. Engineering: Post-Secondary (university, college, or post-secondary)
  3. Art, Jewelry & Architecture (any grade level)

This year, it’s even easier to submit your designs. Simply log into GrabCAD (create a profile if you haven’t already), select the contest category you’d like to submit a design for, read the contest rules to make sure your entry has everything you need to compete, and click “Submit an Entry.”

Here’s what you need to know.

Deadline: March 9, 2017

How to Apply:

Individuals or design teams are asked to create entries using 3D CAD software, submitting files in STL format through the GrabCAD platform – along with a written description highlighting the design’s value and benefit. To win, your design must be:

  • 3D Printable (FDM, SLS, SLA or PolyJet).
  • No greater than 254 x 254 x 254 mm (10 x 10 x 10 in.).
  • Require minimal post-processing.
  • Include relevant calculations.
  • Include a compelling description (written and/or video).

Your entry must include:

  • STEP/IGES
  • STL file format
  • Rendering of your design
  • 3D printed method & material selected
  • Proof that your design can be 3d printed (screen capture from a 3d printing service, or photo of the printed design)
  • Compelling description
  • Name of your school and/or advising instructor (include in entry description)

Judging Criteria:

All designs should prove mechanically sound, realistic and achievable. Submissions are analyzed and judged based on:

  • Sound mechanical design
  • Compelling written description
  • Design creativity
  • Product usefulness
  • Aesthetics (art, jewelry and architecture category)

Prizes & Awards:

  • 3D printed model – Ten finalists in each category will receive a 3D printed model of their design and a Stratasys apparel item valued up to $50.
  • $1,000 scholarship – In addition to the perks of being a finalist, one second-place winner in each category will receive a $1000 scholarship.
  • $2,500 scholarship – One first-place winner in each category will receive a $2500 scholarship and all the perks of being a finalist. Plus, his/her instructor will receive a demo 3D printer for limited-time classroom use.
  • $1,000 NCATC scholarship – The National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers (NCATC) will award a $1,000 scholarship to one winning entry in the engineering category. Post-secondary students from NCATC member schools will be eligible for this bonus prize.

The finalists will be announced by August 1, 2017, and the winners will be announced by September 1, 2017.
