It can be time consuming and cumbersome to keep track of all the key grant opportunities for educators in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C., which is where most of our customers are located. We wanted to help by pulling together a list that organizes many of these opportunities by deadline, amount and details on the application process.
Some of the opportunities are available nationally while others have specific geographic restrictions (which we’ve noted in red below).

American Honda Foundation Grants for Education
The American Honda Foundation makes grants to K-12 schools, colleges, universities, trade schools, and other youth-focused nonprofit organizations for programs that benefit youth and scientific education.
Deadline: February 1 and August 1 (May 1 deadline for returning organizations – those funded at least once in the last 10 years)
Amount: $20,000 – $75,000
Motorola Solutions Foundation Grants (Maryland)
Motorola supports programs that advance STEM education, preparing the next generation of innovators. Applicants must be near the metropolitan area of Motorola Solutions offices. Within the area Amtek serves, this includes Linthicum, Maryland.
Deadline: End of day February 3, 2020 (recipients will be notified in late March)
Amount: Up to $50,000
Appalachian Regional Commission POWER Grants
The ARC Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) Grants supports efforts to create a more vibrant economic future for coal-impacted communities.
Maryland: Allegany, Garrett, and Washington
Virginia: Alleghany, Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Craig, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Henry, Lee, Montgomery, Pulaski, Rockbridge, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe

Amount: $500,000 – $1.5 million
Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Grants (Maryland, NoVa, Washington, D.C.)
The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation’s grants related to workforce development largely reflect two types of organizations: those that focus on a specific field and help individuals on a career pathway or those that concentrate on broader job- and career-readiness.
Schools must serve residents in the District of Columbia, Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in Maryland, Arlington and Fairfax Counties, and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia.
Amount: No set amount
Deadline: The Foundation has three funding cycles per year. The next approaching deadline is Monday, March 2, 2020 (5:00pm ET).
Program Modernization Grants (West Virginia)
The WVDE Career and Technical Education Modernization Grant is an opportunity to request funding to update and/or replace CTE equipment.
Applications must be prepared and submitted by management level employees in a Simulated Workplace company in order for application to be considered for funding.
Deadline: April 15
Amount: Max $20,000
Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. (TMMWV)
TMMWV offers grants for local educators with special consideration is given to STEM programs as we continue to develop the future workforce. The following West Virginia counties are eligible: Putnam (priority), Cabell, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, and Mason County. Statewide Programs in West Virginia will be considered, but only on a limited basis.
Amount: No set amount
Deadline: There are two deadlines a year — May 1 (recipients are notified in July) and November 1 (recipients are notified in February).
Frontier Technology in the Classroom Grant
Through this grant eligible K-12 teachers may apply to win $1,000 to use toward the purchase of technology equipment for use in the classroom. To apply, you’ll need to write a brief lesson plan (500-word max) that creatively details how you would use the technology of your choice in your classroom to enhance the educational experience and social responsibility in the classroom.
Deadline: May 15, 2020
Amount: $1,ooo
Harbor Freight Tools
The Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence awards $1 million in funding each year to public high school skilled trades teachers and programs.
Deadline: Typically in June but the exact date for 2020 is TBD…
Amount:
- Three (3) 1st-place prizes of $100,000 — with $70,000 going to the public high school skilled trades program and $30,000 going to the eligible individual skilled trades teacher or teacher teams
- Fifteen (15) 2nd-place winners will each be awarded $50,000, with $35,000 to the public high school program and $15,000 to the eligible teacher or teacher team.
Georgia Pacific Foundation Grants (Virginia)
Education is one of four focus areas the Georgia-Pacific Foundation uses as guideposts for its grants. Applicants must be located within 30 miles of a GP manufacturing community. (*Within the states Amtek serves, GP has facilities in Ridgeway VA and Emporia VA)

Deadline: Applications are reviewed on a rolling cycle, however a deadline of October 31 is encouraged.
Lockheed Martin Corporation Grants
Lockheed Martin provides funding to STEM education outreach activities for students from elementary school through college.
Deadline: Applications are accepted year-round. Evaluations are typically performed quarterly. Some grant applications may not be able to be considered until the next year’s budget cycle, particularly those received in the second half of the year.

Waste Management Grants
Waste Management supports environmental education programs targeted at middle and high school students. WM supports causes within the areas in which it operates. There are several locations across Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. You can search your location in this interactive map so see if WM has facilities near you.

Walton Family Foundation (Washington, D.C.)
The Walton Family Foundation supports public K-12 charter schools that represent:
- Novel school models, including those that have new approaches to career and technical education
- Citywide enrollment models that include both traditional and public charter schools
- New ways — beyond test scores — to advance long-term success, including understanding noncognitive attributes

Eligibility: The Walton Family Foundation accepts only solicited proposals so an organization interested in applying for a grant needs first to send a brief letter of inquiry. The letter should succinctly describe the organization and the proposed project, specify and briefly explain its relevance to a particular Walton Family Foundation funding area and initiative, and provide an estimate of the funds that would be requested.
As part of its 2020 K-12 strategic plan, the Walton Family Foundation plans to focus its grantmaking on select cities across the country (*Within the states Amtek serves, that includes Washington, D.C.)

The Alleghany Foundation Educational Excellence Grants (Virginia)
The Allegheny Foundation supports development in Early Childhood Development, K-12 Public Education and post-secondary education. Priority is given to organizations serving the Alleghany County, Covington, and Clifton Forge areas of Virginia.

Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation Grants (West Virginia)
The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation funds:
- Programs that improve teacher quality through professional development and innovative instructional strategies.
- Arts education, the integration of arts into other disciplines, and the partnership of community arts groups and higher education with the PreK-12 education system.
- Career education that aligns secondary and post-secondary programs to high-demand, high-wage occupations.
These grants are available in West Virginia.
