Last week we traveled across Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland for a series of CNC workshops, and what a great turnout!
Denford Technical & Production Director Steve Oddy came all the way from the UK to teach a variety of practical applications using CNC machines and talk about tips for CNC machining in educational environments.
Steve showed us how to generate two separate V-Carve machining plans for fonts that have letters that overlap. If you just use a single machining plan and select overlapping letters, it will cause unexpected results. So to fix this, select only letters that don’t overlap in the first plan, then the remaining letters in the second plan and the machine will cut the letters out exactly how you intend.
He also showed us how to set up the different tools in VR Milling as well as create a custom material in the software so the machine knows how deep to cut each pass.
Attendees got to test out their design skills using QuickCAM 2D software with the V-Carve plugin by create blocks with custom logos and text. The end result appears as a “V-cut.”
Check out some of the photos from each event.
Huge thanks to Tidewater Community College, Liberty University, BridgeValley Community & Technical College’s Advanced Technology Center and Montgomery College for hosting these workshops.
We also want to thank SolidWorks for donating a copy of SolidWorks Student Edition to every attendee.
Last, but not least, thanks to everyone who made it out to the workshop!
If you need project ideas, what to share your own ideas or need help troubleshooting, don’t forget Denford has a great forum with members who are willing to help and have some really creative ideas for classroom projects.
