Classroom Project: Custom Foam Tool Kit for Your Makerspace or Woodshop

Looking for a way to organize all the tools in your makerspace or woodshop? Why not get your students involved and create a custom foam tool kit using your Kern Laser System.

This is a fun classroom project that gives students hands-on experience with a laser cutter but also with the design software CorelDraw. The best part is the final result is something you’ll use every day at school.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Step 1: Measure the workspace you want to organize the tools within.

Step 2: Layout the tools on the surface of the lightbox. Ensure that the tools are kept within the dimensions of your workspace. A buffer zone around the perimeter of the workspace should be considered.

Step 3: Using a camera take a centered overhead photo of the entire lightbox extents. Note the dimensions of the lightbox. (In this case, the lightbox is 48” x 24”)

Step 4: Import the picture into CorelDraw. Using the Crop Tool, crop the image to the extents of the lightbox. Next, resize the photo to the measurement determined in Step 3 (48” x 24”). This ensures that the tools are sized correctly.

And don’t forget to Tweet us pictures of how your final project comes out — good luck!
