How One School Uses Vacuum Forming for Cross-Curricular Applications

Educators are always asking us how to make the most out of their technology investments, especially when it comes to seemingly niche equipment found in makerspaces and CTE classrooms.

One school in Illinois — Oakland High School — has found creative ways to use a Formech vacuum former across a variety of subjects, including social studies, music, theatre and culinary classes.

It made chocolate molds in a food technology class, music stands in a music lesson, theatrical masks in an English class, a voting box in geography, and more. The reactions from both faculty and students were incredible, and everyone took away inspiration and skills for using the machine in their class – and with a real understanding of the cross-subject application of vacuum forming.

The teachers now have ideas for using geography maps, masks for Shakespearean plays, props for reenactments, mascot masks and other team spirit items, and even sportswear applications for Physical Education classes.

What creative ways are you using vacuum forming in your makerspace or classroom?
