Just last week MakerBot announced the addition of two new materials — PC-ABS and PC-ABS FR — which brings the total number of materials available on the METHOD platform to 10 (also includes ABS, ASA Nylon, PETG, Tough, PLA, SR-30, PVA plus third-party materials from other filament suppliers).
So what exactly is the different between the two new materials?
PC-ABS (polycarbonate-acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) has high heat resistant properties and high tensile strength, which make it optimal for use across automotive, rail, and electronics industries. When compared to ABS, PC-ABS has
- Increased rigidity
- Increased impact strength
- Increased heat resistance
PC-ABS FR is a flame-retardant material that meets the UL-94 V0 standard, an important fire safety specification. Essentially, now MakerBot METHOD users can prototype parts to be used in electrical/thermal testing.
These materials are compatible with METHOD X and SR-30 support material. They will start shipping in June.
