TECHNICAL TRAINING REPORT

This month, we look at how Tesla's battery systems could have implications for renewable energy training programs and hear advice on how to encourage girls' interest in engineering fields.

We also wrap up the second in our 2-part tutorial series on how to make a sign on a CNC machine.

Also, we're stocking a new desktop CNC wire bender that's picking up steam in schools plus our friends at Siements are hosting a free PLC training workshop at BridgeValley Community & Technical College in June.

What Tesla’s Battery Systems Say About Renewable Energy Training

Specialized training in subjects like home energy production from renewable resources, generator technologies, smart-grid technologies (SVC, STATCOM, HVDC transmission, etc.) and storage of electrical energy in batteries is imperative for renewable energy engineering classes, especially in the wake of the new Tesla battery systems for consumers and businesses.

TUTORIAL: How to Make a Simple Sign with a CNC Machine - Part 2

After our CNC Machine Workshop in March, we showed you how to design a sign in QuickCAM 2D Design with V-Carve.

In Part 2 of this tutorial, we’re sending the part to a Denford 2600 Pro Router to be made. You will learn to connect to the machine in VR Milling, jog the machine, change tools, set work offsets, then run the part.

Introducing a Desktop CNC Wire Bender for the Classroom

Ever heard of the DIWire?

It’s a desktop CNC wire bender that pairs well with laser cutters, CNC routers and 3D printers so that students can bend wire into virtually any shape to create multifaceted designs easily.

There's even an online community sharing site that has a variety of project ideas that could work well in the classroom.

Encouraging Girls’ and Women’s Interest in Engineering Fields

Social encouragement from family, friends and educators, regardless of their technical expertise, is the factor most likely to encourage girls’ interest in computer science.

A recent report from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) offers recommendations on what educators can do to eliminate gender bias in the classroom and get girls excited about STEM.
