Building a Manufacturing Program at Boyd Tech High School

Background

Boyd Tech High School recognized the growing need for a manufacturing program to prepare students for careers in modern manufacturing. With no existing program, the school embarked on an ambitious project to build one from the ground up. They renovated two rooms in their existing building to create a dedicated classroom space and a shop space.

Implementation

The classroom space was designed as a computer lab where students could learn theory and software applications crucial to manufacturing. Meanwhile, the shop provided a hands-on learning environment equipped with state-of-the-art tools and machinery. The shop included Amatrol technical training equipment, CNC machines (mill and lathe), a FANUC Robot, FANUC CNC Simulators, SACA Certification tools, and various machine tools. To support these activities, heavy-duty technical furniture from GMI was incorporated into both the lab and classroom spaces, ensuring durability and functionality.

Challenges and Solutions

Lab installations of this scale come with many moving parts, requiring meticulous planning and coordination. Amtek worked closely with the Project Manager to manage equipment and furniture deliveries and installations around a tightly scheduled deadline. Ensuring all installations met high standards was paramount. For instance, all machine tools had specialized air and power requirements. Amtek collaborated with the Project Manager to ensure these needs were met while optimizing the lab layout for efficiency and effectiveness. This included arranging the rigging to move equipment into the space and overseeing the installation from start to finish.

Outcome

The result was a well-organized, fully-equipped manufacturing program that seamlessly integrated theory and hands-on practice. The classroom provided the necessary theoretical foundation and software training, while the shop allowed students to apply their knowledge using advanced equipment. The collaboration between Boyd Tech High School and Amtek ensured that the project was completed on time and to the highest standards, creating a robust educational environment for students to develop valuable manufacturing skills. This comprehensive setup not only prepared students for certification through SACA but also equipped them with practical experience, enhancing their readiness for future careers in the manufacturing industry.
