Summer is the perfect opportunity for educators to take a week or two to learn the latest in teaching best practices and hone their leadership skills. Many of our customers enjoy taking time off in the summer but we recognize many of you also might be looking for engaging professional development opportunities to fill your time as well. These are a few opportunities we’d recommend.
NIST Summer Institute Program
When: July 10-21, 2017
Where: NIST’s Gaithersburg, Maryland campus
This is a two-week summer institute for middle school science teachers that includes $2,000 stipend plus up to $2,000 to cover travel and lodging.
It is a hands-on workshop that provides teachers with instructional materials and ideas to use in their teaching, and will emphasize the measurement science done at NIST. The aim is to take a selection of the cutting-edge research at NIST and help the teachers translate this experience through hands-on activities involving classroom-based learning modules.

West Virginia Statewide Technology Conference 2017
When: July 18-20, 2017
Where: Morgantown, West Virginia
The WVSTC Conference brings together STEM and technology educators from around the state for networking and professional development opportunities. Each day is full of mini workshops and this year Amtek will be offering a workshop on reverse engineering with a specific focus on 3D scanning and 3D printing.

VATIE Summer Conference
When: July 26-28, 2017
Where: Norfolk, Virginia
The Virginia Association of Trade and Industrial Educators (VATIE) Conference aims to bridge the gap between trade education and industry with robust programming that includes several professional development workshops. This year Amtek is partnering with Siemens to offer a workshop on Siemens certification for machine tool instructors.

SOLIDWORKS Training Workshop for Educators
When: Monday, July 31 – Friday, August 4, 2017 from 9am-5pm each day
Where: Virginia Commonwealth University
Led by CSWP-certified instructor Tim Callinan, this 5-day SOLIDWORKS Training Workshop gives educators a crash course on SOLIDWORKS, covering topics such as: SOLIDWORKS basics and the user interface, an introduction to sketching, and basic part modeling.
Attendees will leave with the following takeaways:
- Know and understand the functions of the SOLIDWORKS CAD system
- Create, save and edit SolidWorks drawings, parts and perform file management functions
- Understand the user interface, menus, toolbars and broad concepts
- Understand the techniques and construction to create a complex 3D part

MADE CLEAR and NOAA Climate Change Academy Summer 2017
When: August 8-10, 2017
Where: Towson University campus, Maryland
During this Earth Systems Science Professional Learning Opportunity, lessons and materials will focus on:
- The causes and effects of a changing climate
- How climate change is impacting cities, agriculture, and coastal areas
- Solutions and stewardship activities to address climate change
Attendees will receive materials and resources to start their climate change teaching portfolio. The Academy is approved for 5 MSDE CPD credits and 30 DE Clock Hours. Find more details here.
