Learn how to create a fire pit using a multi-process welder and plasma cutterĀ in this fun video tutorial.
Steve Christena, owner of Arc Academy offers step-by-step instructions on building a (smaller) fire pit using two common technologies you’ll find in any CTE lab or wood shop — welding and plasma cutting. Here’s what you should consider:
Come up with a plan, design your fire pit, and have all your measurements ready before you begin.
In this video, Christena builds a fire pit with sides with a 30-inch length top that tapers into 24-inch midsection and tapers back out to 30-inch base for good stability.
Determine the materials you want to use.
In this video they useĀ 16 gaugeĀ mild steel but Christena says anything would work here. You can use whatever you prefer!
Make the most of the tools you have in your shop.
If you don’t have a press brake to bend the steel, use an angle grinder with a cutting disc to lightly score the area you want to bend to make it easier to bend.
Work from the bottom up.
Tack starting from the base and work your way up. This ensures that if your cuts are a little bit off in any way, you can bend and adjust the metal so that all the pieces fit together before you begin welding.
