We are often impressed with how our customers use the technologies we supply. The United States Naval Academy is no exception.
Capt Brad Baker at Makerspace USNA challenges his students every semester with unique, creative additive manufacturing projects. Most recently, Makerspace USNA saw a team of two Additive Manufacturing course students — Midshipman 1/C Otis Brown and Midshipman 1/C J.D. Dollahite — recreate an approximately 5% model scale of the statue of Tecumseh at the United States Naval Academy.
These two students took complete ownership of the project, using a a Creaform Go!SCAN SPARK handheld 3D scanner to capture in full detail every aspect of the larger than life statue. With some extra effort to merge multiple scans using Creaform’s VXelements software, they were able to create an STL file identical to the statue that they could then 3D print in Nylon 12 on the FormLabs Fuse 1 3D printer. They then finished and painted the model at Makerspace USNA’s post-processing facilities.
See how they did it in the video below!
